Energy and Sustainability are topics that many organizations plan to further explore in 2021. The EPA estimates 30 percent of the energy consumed in commercial facilities is wasted. Energy efficiency is the single largest way to eliminate this waste, reduce emissions, and save money. Over the last 18 years Ecosave has helped manufacturing facilities better understand their energy consumption and implement technologies that can reduce energy operating costs typically 25-45% while also achieving sustainability goals.

Contaminant Protection for Food Processing Operations: Member Experts

Contaminant Protection - Roofing

The most valuable benefit of any professional organization is the knowledge of its members. Today we hear from Dave Mohr of Seaman Corporation. Want to share your member expertise? Send your tips and advice to [email protected]

As a food processor, one of the most important choices you can make is what roofing system you trust to protect your processing plants. Roofing systems are the first line of defense against food contamination and equipment damage, two impacts with potentially devastating consequences. While businesses in many industries can afford minimal roof leaks for periods of time, the same is not true for companies that process food products.

For critical food processing facilities, any leak (no matter how minuscule) occurring over even the shortest period of time is unacceptable. Any amount of food contamination caused by a leaking roof can be costly to your business’s reputation and, most importantly the health and safety of your customers. Potential impacts of a leaking roof could cause the complete shutdown of your plant resulting in:

  • Extensive facility downtime
  • Foodborne disease outbreaks and subsequent lawsuits
  • Expensive damage to your facility
  • A significant loss of revenue
In food processing facilities, high foot traffic and maintenance on the roof is common. The preferred choice for roofing over a food processing facility is to choose a membrane with a heavy based fabric and knit design, one that provides superior puncture and tear resistance, and one that will last and protect your facility for years past any warranty date.

Roofing on food processing facilities must also be able to withstand exposure to grease, oils, and other toxic chemicals. As buildup of grease and oil increases it poses a risk to contamination and sanitation within the facility.  From the food processor’s standpoint it is important to invest in a roof that is easy to maintain, is durable and provides worry-free protection year after year.

HR Corner: Top 5 HR Risks - 2020 Bonus COVID-19 Risks

Overcoming the Top 5 HR Risks: 2020 Bonus - COVID-19 Risks

Jeff Agranoff, HR Consulting Principal, Grassi Advisors & Accountants

COVID-19 Risks
In addition to these 5 major areas of HR risk, which are all exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis, there are risks inherent in the pandemic itself. Employee morale and loyalty can be severely tested in situations where furloughs and layoffs are inevitable. If you find yourself needing to make these tough decisions to contain employee-related costs, take purposeful steps to make the process easier for those who are leaving and staying. To the extent possible, communicate with remaining employees about the potential and timeline to bring furloughed employees back. Discuss how laid-off or furloughed employees’ roles will be covered. Offer departing employees job coaching and resume building services to support them in this transition.

Employees will want to stay with employers who also value and enable their career progression. If you do not have one already, design your organizational chart by department to map out the progression of positions available in your company. Include descriptions that allow employees to understand how the roles are gradually elevated and connected.

News from the FIC: COVID-19 Impacts FSMA Rule

Intentional adulteration…when a food product is intentionally contaminated by a person or group of people, either internal or external to a food business, has become even a greater concern as food processors battle through the challenges and ramifications of COVID-19.
